There are mornings in Corsica, in spring, when you pull on your helmet and something happens before you’ve even turned the key.<\/strong> A scent. Powerful, complex, almost sweet. The maquis has just awoken, it perfumes the hillsides for kilometres around, and you understand immediately why the ancients called this island a isula macchia, quellu prufume di u Mediterraniu<\/em> \u2014 the island of the maquis, that scent of the Mediterranean.<\/p>\n

In a car, windows closed, air conditioning on, you would experience it in a far more diluted way. On a motorcycle, with the wind entering under your raised visor, the warm air brushing your face, each bend plunging you into a new wave of fragrance… you live it fully. It is an experience that only a motorcycle can provide to this degree.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Spring in Corsica on a motorcycle \u2014 from April to early June \u2014 is a season in its own right. Not simply a quiet period before the high season. A complete sensory experience: the scents of the flowering maquis, the crystal-clear light of early summer, ideal temperatures between 18\u00b0C and 22\u00b0C, the winding roads of the hinterland entirely deserted, the soft green of the mountains contrasting with the incandescent yellow of the broom…<\/p>\n

Why go to Corsica by motorcycle from April onwards? Because it may well be when Corsica is at its most beautiful. And certainly when it gives of itself most generously.<\/strong><\/p>\n

1. The flowering maquis: an olfactory immersion beneath the helmet<\/h2>\n

What motorcycling offers that other travellers will never experience in quite the same way<\/h3>\n

Riding a motorcycle through Corsica in spring means passing through walls of scent<\/strong>. That is not a metaphor. On certain small roads in the Ajaccio hinterland, in April and May, the hillsides are so laden with flowering aromatic plants that the air becomes almost dense. You enter a bend, gain altitude, and suddenly the fragrance changes \u2014 a different plant takes over, a different note asserts itself.<\/p>\n

In a car with the windows closed, this phenomenon is experienced very differently. Even with the windows open, the bodywork filters, speed dilutes, and the interior creates a distance between you and the natural world. Its scent \u2014 a warm note of curry, honey and dry grass \u2014 is instantly recognisable and deeply embedded in the sensory memory of everyone who has ridden in Corsica in spring. It grows on rocky embankments and along mountain roads, and its fragrance carries for dozens of metres.
\n\u2714\ufe0f Spiny broom (Calicotome villosa)<\/strong>: this is the yellow of a Corsican spring. These shrubs with their explosively solar yellow flowers cover the hillsides by the thousand between March and May, and their scent \u2014 soft, floral, with a faint vanilla note \u2014 completes the olfactory picture.<\/p>\n
